May 23, 2010 Rio Grande and Tributaries Fly Fishing Report

SUMMER CONDITIONS ARE HERE. MONSOON AFTERNOON RAINS ARE GATHERING SO BE PREPARED FOR AFTERNOON RAINS WHICH WILL BE WIDELY SCATTERED AND HEAVY AT TIMES.

CIMARRON: 16cfs from the dam and 26cfs on the lower stretches.  A little skinny but fishable with dries and short droppers. Caddis pattern and Moths are good for the dries and smaller, light caddis, midge or mayfly nymphs underneath.

RED RIVER: 90cfs in the canyon. Getting better and we were down there on 7/7 and had a good day although this is still a lot of water in places where the gradient is steep and the water white. Hit any clear water and side pockets with stones and caddis. Caddis droppers are all you need below. Droppers a bit longer than usual [20" ] The lower river near the confluence has the best gradient.

RIO GRANDE: 75cfs in Cerro and 266cfs at Taos Jct. Bridge. Flow is good and action is best early or late. Caddis, Hoppers or any large dry followed by a 24" dropper with a Tungsten beadhead. If these flows last into the Fall this could be a banner year on the Rio.

COSTILLA: 46cfs from the dam and 70cfs in Amalia. They are still hitting those big dries in the faster water but are more selective in the deep slow banks and bends. Try a PMD, Caddis  dry about 24" below your Hopper-Stone for fussier fish. From 4pm til dark its Caddis time. For more current info call Aurelio at 575-586-2496.

RIO PUEBLO: 23cfs. Too Low

EMBUDO: 174cfs. Lots of rain has pumped up the flow below Penasco but the Santa Barbara above town should be good and flowing about 60cfs and clear.

CONEJOS:
137cfs from the dam and 266cfs in Mogote. Getting close to the Magic number for the Pinnnacle which is 100cfs from the dam. Everywhere else is accessible. Bring rain gear. Stones or Green drakes on top and stonefly nymphs below.  Conejos River Anglers 719-376-5660.

Los Pinos: 26cfs too low.

CULEBRA: 56cfs. Weeds are up so stay in the channels . Try Mutt & Jeff rigs in the deeper bends but return to Dry and dropper with small caddis or other green nympmphs for the shallower runs.
